Only antibiotics for appendicitis? Surgeons dissect recent study

Should one of the world’s most common surgical diseases no longer be routinely categorized as surgical? The answer depends on who you ask. This summer, in a widely publicized report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Finnish researchers reported results from a large multicenter, randomized trial, in which three out of four patients with uncomplicated appendicitis were successfully treated with antibiotics.
