Influenza vaccines for dental health-care providers and patients: Recommendations for the 2015-2016 season
Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by a myxovirus. It is one of many vaccine-preventable diseases. For that reason, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommend that health-care providers (HCPs) in the US receive annual flu vaccines. Recommendations are based upon the fact that cross-transmission can occur from patients and coworkers who have not been vaccinated. Dental health-care providers (DHCPs) work in close proximity to the oral cavity, and secretions and aerosols emitted from the respiratory tract often create the potential for infection.
