The art of management often comes down to how to create positive human relations. Effective management styles are numerous and varied. Strict boss or compassionate counselor — which management style will get the job done?
In some industries a manager is expected to be particularly rough and tough, with an almost "take no prisoners" attitude. The industry, the company's environment, and type of employees are such that a very strong, assertive, and even aggressive management style are what is necessary to guide the employees to perform certain tasks together as a well oiled machine, on an extremely rigid time schedule, and with the utmost precision.
Conversely, in other industries and companies, a very soft, gentle, and consultative approach to managing the staff are what work best in moving the company forward. Many companies have a very fluid, creative, and completely relaxed atmosphere in which the lines between the management and staff are often quite blurred.
One may argue that there's no real rule to how a company should be run, especially since there are so many factors that have to be taken into consideration. Many times it's trial and error. At the end of the day, if the company continues to succeed then it can probably be said that to some extent the management formula is working.
