Highlights from 2015 National Walking Summit

ACSM played a key role in the 2015 National Walking Summit held in Washington, D.C., last week. The event, which was attended by more than 500 people, provided participants with an opportunity to discuss best practices, share success stories and develop strategies that will continue to pave the way to a walkable America. Participants heard from leading speakers, including U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. ACSM was a supporter of the summit, along with Kaiser Permanente, AARP, American Heart Association, National League of Cities, the National Association of Realtors and others.   • "Walk the Hill Day" on Capitol Hill

  • ACSM joined America Walks for Walk the Hill Day on Capitol Hill, held prior to the 2015 National Walking Summit last Wednesday. More than 150 local advocates visited offices of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives to discuss the issues of walking and promoting walkable communities for every American. Representing 33 states from across the U.S., advocates spoke with members of Congress and their staff to request their support for critical legislation that would allow every American safe and accessible walking conditions. Participants included experts from ACSM and additional national, state and regional organizations and state government agencies focused on making America a great place to walk.

  • ACSM Awards Inaugural Walks the Walk Outstanding Clinician Award

  • ACSM awarded the inaugural Walks the Walk Outstanding Clinician Award to David Andrew Sabgir, MD, at the lunch plenary session of the National Walking Summit last Thursday. ACSM established the annual Outstanding Clinician Award Program in an effort to acknowledge clinicians who have integrated walking consultation/physical activity assessment into their practice and who exemplify role models in life and practice. Dr. David Sabgir, a board certified cardiologist, is a renowned health and wellness expert who created the Walk with a Doc program. In addition to Walk with a Doc, Dr. Sabgir routinely serves as an expert to essentially every print and broadcast media outlet in central Ohio on multiple topics including diet, causes of fatigue, blood pressure, alcohol consumption and more. In addition to medicine, Dr. Sabgir’s passion is communicating the benefits of exercise, especially walking. Dr. Sabgir is an active member of the American Heart Association, American Medical Association, American Society of Echocardiography, American College of Cardiology and American College of Physicians. more
