Former army pilot earned his wings
from Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald
The last time U.S. Army pilot Bill Schweinfurth got out from behind the controls of an airplane, he knew he was done. "I remember the day I shut it down," he said. "And I knew." Schweinfurth said his first tour in Vietnam was 1968 to 1969, and his second was 1971 to 1972. After he retired, he never flew again. "It's not like driving a car," he said, adding in order to fly safely, one must do it frequently. Schweinfurth spent 26 years flying over exotic locales such as Vietnam, Liberia, Senegal and Cambodia.
