NCOA Fall Prevention Summit update from Balance and Falls SIG Chair Mindy Renfro

from AGPT

From June 11: I participated in the NCOA's Fall Prevention Summit for the White House Conference on Aging on April 30. Many thought provoking conversations, presentations and deliberations resulted in an update of the Falls Free National Action Plan first written in 2005. When the updated document is available, I will be sure to share the link with you. If you are not familiar with the 2005 National Action Plan, it can be read here.

One of the overarching themes from this group of national experts was the need for positive messaging and a huge public health approach to simply increasing physical activity for older adults. We should all continue to work hard to promote evidence-based fall prevention programs, learn and use Otago Exercise Program with our patients, test ALL adults aged 65+ with the STEADI fall risk toolkit and accept the call to go out in the community and teach or support Stepping On, T'ai Chi, Matter of Balance, etc. However, we must really simply encourage people to move more!
