Once upon a time, unicorns were celebrated as a magical herd of highly valued private companies poised for smashing exits. Popularly attributed to Aileen Lee of Cowboy Ventures — who first used the term in a November 2013 guest post for TechCrunch — "unicorn" has evolved from pithy moniker into controversial buzzword that seems to encapsulate our simmering anxieties about overvaluations, slow IPO markets and "bubbles" in Silicon Valley.
