More than 60 languages spoken in New Haven, Connecticut, schools present challenge, opportunity
from New Haven Register
When she arrived in Connecticut almost three years ago from Congo, Ndengo Mwilelo did not speak English. "In my country, you have to pay a lot of money just to learn how to say 'good morning,'" said Mwilelo, who is now in the 11th grade at Wilbur Cross High School. Mwilelo is one of about 6,000 students in the New Haven Public Schools identified by the Choice and Enrollment Office in 2015 as having a primary language other than English. Approximately 23.1 percent of the district's students do not identify English as their primary language.
