The House was in recess. In the Senate, Democrats were able to block consideration of a House-passed Syria refugee bill. Needing 60 votes to advance, they voted 55-43 after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) decided against holding votes on four amendments proposed by Democrats, including one on Donald Trump's plan to ban Muslims from entering the United States. The bill would tighten screenings of Syrian and Iraqi refugees entering the U.S. While the House passed the measure 289-137 in a vote held after the Paris terrorist attacks, most Senate Democrats opposed the bill. The Senate was also unable to overcome a veto that the president issued over the controversial WATERS of the US rule. more
