2016 Florida Legislative Update — The "Battle of Balance Billing" continues
The Florida House Appropriations Committee unanimously approved on February 9 a bill barring health providers from issuing the remainder of medical bills not paid by insurers under certain circumstances.
Along with HB 221, the Florida Senate Insurance Committee on February 16 approved a bill aimed at protecting insured patients from getting billed for emergency health care by providers who are not part of their insurance company’s network.
SB 1442 was passed by the committee after Senator Joe Negron withdrew a controversial amendment from the bill.
FCEP is working with numerous legislators and coalitions on critical legislation dealing with balance billing.
“This is a pivotal time for FCEP in our history of working to support our patients while fighting to preserve fair payment for our services,” FCEP President Dr. Steve Kailes said.
Two weeks remain in the Florida legislative session.
