The next, next thing: Virtual power plants
from Smart Grid News
A virtual power plant is a collection of generation resources that can be scheduled and managed as a combined resource to provide capacity, voltage/frequency support and/or market participation — essentially, an aggregated energy resource that can be reliably dispatched as an optimized block. At this point, VPPs have only a small penetration worldwide, but the growing penetration of renewable generation coupled with increasingly capable storage and four-quadrant inverter will drive VPPs to become a more attractive option.
