Shipping US wood pellets to UK is greener than burning coal
Demand for U.S. wood pellets for burning in biomass power plants is rising in Europe. But will this reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing coal-based electricity? And will it increase tree harvesting in the southern U.S.? With that in mind, a team has shown that the greenhouse gas intensity of electricity from burning wood pellets is 74–85 percent lower than the greenhouse gas intensity of coal-based electricity.
