House bill threatens to gut school nutrition standards
A new and ugly school food fight is brewing in Washington, D.C., thanks to a provocative Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill draft prepared by the House Education and Workforce Committee. Politico called the draft "everything health advocates feared," and noted that it would "block future sodium reductions in schools mandated by the Department of Agriculture, allow all forms of produce into a currently fresh-only fruit and vegetable snack program and make it tougher for schools to be eligible for universal free lunch, among other things."
