Bill offers new approach to English language learner education
from The MetroWest Daily News
A pending bill on Beacon Hill could significantly alter the way educators teach children who arrive at school speaking little or no English. "As a whole, we wanted to have more flexibility," said state Sen. Sal DiDomenico, D-Everett. "Every kid is different and every kid learns a little differently. We wanted to allow schools to have more options." DiDomenico's bill, which Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez, D-Jamaica Plain, sponsored in the House, would provide schools with a greater ability to use bilingual education programs and instruct students in their native languages. Supporters of bilingual education say it eases students' transitions and helps prevent them from falling behind in their academic subjects while learning English.
