'Out-of-the-tray' thinking helps medical device maker reduce package size
from Packaging Digest
Volcano Corp. needed a new packaging system for its Phoenix Atherectomy System, a novel catheter that cuts, captures, and clears plaque from arteries in the periphery. The first generation of clinical product was using a 5-ft-long box that took up a lot of space and was vulnerable to damage during shipping, reports Torrey Smith, R&D Engineer. But while the company sought to reduce overall material and shipping costs and reduce packaging waste, it also needed to protect the unwieldy device and its components.
