NASA looks to fuel cells and lithium air batteries for next generation of propulsion
from Power EETimes
The technologies will be evaluated and explored in the next two years under the Transformative Aeronautics Concepts Program. Other areas include using 3-D printing electric motor components, new mechanisms for changing the shape of an aircraft wing in flight; and the use of a lightweight material called aerogel in the design and development of aircraft antenna. These five concepts aim to cut fuel use by half, lower harmful emissions by 75 per cent, and significantly reduce aircraft noise.
