Hacking tech's inclusion pledge: It's more than a numbers game

Tech companies have been playing the public accountability game with diversity metrics for some years now. So in many ways, the tech pledge signed by more than 30 companies this summer, after strong and sustained encouragement from the White House to make their workforces more representative of the American people, is nothing new. For a group of companies to commit to disclose data on how well they each recruit, retain, and advance "diverse talent" (read: women and people of color) without committing to maintaining an inclusive and equitable environment essentially reduces diversity to a numbers game — a game that would be both short-sighted and doomed to fail.
