|Antarctica in a RV8, the countdown is on!
RV8 wheel/skis leaving for Hobart, Tasmania this week, where Miguel Gordillo will be installing them on his highly modified RV8 for his flight over Antarctica. http://www.skypolaris.org/
The month of August became a marathon for Patrick, to deliver the skis on time, working every evening and weekends to build a set of custom built RV8 wheel/skis for this trip.
Miguel will be departing Madrid, Spain in his RV8 for Tasmania. Then the first leg of this flight is across the Indian Ocean from Hobart, Tasmania to Italy’s Zucchelli Station in Antarctica, a grueling 14 hours non-stop flight, his alternate is France’s Dumont D’Urville Station, a tiny rocky island located only 10 hours away. His RV has a total of 757 liters (200 US Gal) of fuel and estimates up to 20 hours of endurance.
Miguel is carrying COPA Wings decal and will stick them on the bulletin boards of each Antarctic Station he lands during this trip.
Any COPA members planning to visit Antarctica? Look for the COPA Wings decal!
Although Miguel will be landing in Antarctica, it will be Canadian skis that will touch down first on the Continent!! more
