A primer on helping immigrant students feel welcome in school

Last fall, anti-immigrant signs posted in the halls as part of a homework assignment tied to immigration and the presidential election sparked anger, confusion and fear at Erwin High School, a 1,300-student school here. More than a year later, school staff still refer to it as "The Incident," a class assignment viewed out of context on social media, and something that doesn't reflect what really goes in the hallways and classrooms of one of the most diverse schools in the region.
