But for a shovel disturbing an old metal plaque hidden beneath the rich soil of an Italian vineyard, Donald McLean might have been forgotten. He wasn't unique, 18-year-old McLean — no more than the other 619,636 Canadians who enlisted to fight for King and Country during the First World War, and there was certainly nothing to distinguish him from the 61,000 who never made it home.
