A new diagnostic work-up algorithm for patients suspected of having a pulmonary embolism might substantially reduce the need for chest CT scans, researchers suggested here. Tom van der Hulle, MD, of University of Leiden, The Netherlands, suggested that use of the simplified algorithm could eliminate as many as 14 percent of the CT scans ordered when patients come to the emergency room complaining of chest pain.
