North Park Armoury gets permanent fix 100 years after Halifax Explosion

from The Chronicle Herald

When the North Park Armoury — the massive sandstone landmark that broods over the Halifax Common — was jostled in the 1917 Halifax Explosion, the two-foot-thick walls held firm, though all around them was flattened. One wall, on the west side, leaned slightly, so engineers applied a "temporary" repair. Now, a century later, rain has been getting into the mortar and loosening the stones, so it's time to make the century-old repair permanent, says a leading architect with the Department of National Defence. And so, the wall will be rebuilt and the rest of the building rehabilitated, in a $131 million project that will start next summer. more
