A Family Day story: B.C.'s child-care crisis and the fight to save Waterside
from Vancouver Sun
When my first baby was a newborn, it became clear to me that I needed to return to work as soon as my parental leave ended. In addition to not being able to manage Vancouver's high cost of living solely on my husband's income, I missed the dynamism of my high school teaching position. Unfortunately I learned that child care in Vancouver is expensive, variable in quality, and hard to find. So, it is perplexing and disheartening that the outstanding daycare I eventually won a spot at, the Waterside Child Development Centre operated by the Developmental Disabilities Association (DDA), is now slated for closure due to funding issues.
