GOP Releases Health Reform Plan
On March 7, the GOP released the American Health Care Act (AHCA) — phase one of their approach for repealing and replacing major portions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). In releasing the AHCA, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) discussed how health care reform would be achieved in three phases. First, Congress would pass the currently proposed legislation through the special budget reconciliation process. For the second phase of the plan, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price would use broad discretion to eliminate/revise current ACA regulations; and third, additional legislative policies, such as allowing individuals to purchase coverage across state lines, that by Senate rules cannot be included in a reconciliation bill.
SCAI will continue to work with congressional leaders toward health care reform that will promote patient access to quality care and preserve physician autonomy.
