$15 million Vancouver Public Library renovation taking shape

It has taken more than 20 years, but a publicly accessible rooftop garden is finally coming to the main branch of the Vancouver Public Library on West Georgia. Workers are expected to start renovating Levels 8 and 9 which, until last year, were used by the provincial government as office space. In the original design competition for the library that opened in 1995, architect Moshe Safdie imagined a "great public garden or great private garden" for the roof. What was built was more of a grassy green roof with no barrier to the ground 30 metres below.
