Lack of funding keeps aging school buses on the road in South Carolina
from Go Upstate
In South Carolina, nearly half the school buses in Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union counties aren't supposed to be on the road. As of February, the S.C. Department of Education reported that 43 percent of the buses in those three counties were 15 years old or older. State lawmakers intended to prevent just that situation when they passed a law a decade ago setting a replacement schedule for about one-fifteenth of the state's school bus fleet each year. That would've eventually ensured no buses older than 15 years were taking students to or from school.
