When Sasha was eight years old, she arrived in the United States from war-torn Sierra Leone to be reunited with her mother, who had left her with a sister when Sasha was just six months old. The transition was not easy. Sasha, whose last name is withheld to protect her privacy, had lived with family in Sierra Leone up until age four. After that, different families took her in. Reconnecting with her mother after so many changes brought its own challenges.
