San Francisco needs to reform its bail system
from San Francisco Chronicle
I’m not a criminal justice expert. I’m the money guy. But I know a bad deal when I see one. And money bail is a bad deal for our city. Money bail — fueled by a multibillion-dollar private industry — drains resources from thousands of San Francisco families. Complaints against the bail industry have grown 300 percent in recent years. The system strips an estimated $10 million to $15 million a year from San Franciscans in nonrefundable fees, according to research by my office.
