Locating Lawrence's line markers
from New Jersey Herald
There was a time when New Jersey was made up of two separate colonies named East Jersey and West Jersey. They were to be governed independently and the official dividing line needed to be set. John Lawrence was a highly respected surveyor and was hired to divide New Jersey. Previous attempts had been made starting from mile zero at Little Egg Harbor but the line never quite made it all the way to the northern end of Sussex County.
