Gastric-bypass bone loss continues 5 years out
from Medscape (free login required)
The bone loss known to occur along with significant weight reduction following gastric-bypass surgery continues even after weight stabilizes, with deterioration seen up to five years postsurgery. Previous research has shown Roux-en-Y gastric bypass to be associated with bone-density declines of 7-10 percent in the initial two years following bypass surgery and as much as a 40-50 percent increased risk of hip and wrist fractures.
