In 1821, Michael Faraday demonstrated electromagnetic induction: A magnet moving in a coil of wire produces an electric current in the wire. This and Faraday's many subsequent discoveries and ideas inspired James Clerk Maxwell (1831–79) to turn those facts and ideas into what we now call Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism. Those equations provide the foundation for electrical engineering.
