Blue Ridge CC's welding program keeping jobs in the Shenandoah Valley
As more students head to college to get four-year degrees, skilled trade workers are becoming more scarce. The American Welding Society predicts that by 2020 there will be a shortage of over 200,000 welders in the U.S. Blue Ridge Community College started their welding certification program back in 2014 to encourage people to join the industry. "It's a serious problem in keeping jobs here local and finding a qualified workforce," said Wiley Perry, welding program manager for the college. "We are aware of that and that's one of the biggest reasons we started our welding program back about four years ago."
