US, Canada forces battling 'drug subs'
In its ongoing battle with drug smugglers, the U.S. Coast Guard recently offloaded more than 47,000 pounds of cocaine with a street value of over $721 million from the Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, in San Diego. The narcotics were turned over to federal agents. The seized cocaine was the result of 23 separate interdictions in the eastern Pacific Ocean by U.S. and Canadian forces operating in international waters off the coast of Central and South America. Criminals have used a combination of low-profile fast boats and "drug subs" — semi-submersible vessels — to try to smuggle narcotics into North America.
