Window installation vs. window fitting

from AWDI

It is a trade in Europe. There are Apprentices, Journeymen and Master Fitters. You do not become a Certified WindowFitter® without experience, knowledge and training. Proper installation matters across the pond, and it shows in the results.

The old business model is supplying a sample case to a salesperson, sending them out on a lead, having them dance in front of the homeowner, coerce the homeowner to sign the contract, come out and install the new window, and collect the money. Caulk ’n’ Walk.

Not so in the U.K. and elsewhere in Europe where FENSA and BFRC demand more. (Look at the T-shirts that sell across the pond). They define the installation professional as a Fitter — that certified businessman who is able to properly and completely assess the old window, its use, and opening, and the intended improvement. Only they can specify a product that will work, and provide the service to fit the new window into the old opening — and satisfy the building regulation demands.

Especially in retrofit, where the old window is ripped out and a new one put in with the hope that the weather barriers are re-established and even improved when the new window is put in service. That requires a proper “fit,” not just anchors, sealant and trim to cover the gaps. more
