Each year in the United States, there are an estimated 141.4 million visits to the emergency department (ED), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pain is the top reason for these encounters, with one study showing pain as a chief complaint in 52.2 percent of ED cases during a 7-day period. “Pain is — and will remain — the most common reason for ED visits,” said Knox H Todd, MD, MPH, FACEP, director of EMLine, an emergency medicine education and practice improvement company, and founding chair of the department of emergency medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. more
