PTSD: 'The dirty little secret of law enforcement'

According to studies cited by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, between seven percent and 19 percent of police officers experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, compared to 3.5 percent of the general population. Some officers have found support and understanding from their families. And unlike the experience of their predecessors who were told to "toughen up," the dangers of persistent and high-level stress are winning some recognition today at senior levels of police departments and law enforcement organizations.
