Bill language would nix Iowa jail risk assessment pilot program
from Des Moines Register
Language inserted into an Iowa House budget appropriations bill in recent days would force the shutdown of pilot programs like one in Polk County that proponents say are meant to cut down on the number of people sitting in jail before trial. If the bill passes, it would require fledgling programs in four Iowa counties to shutter by the end of the year. Critics say the provision would benefit the bail bond industry, which is concerned about losing business if judges lessen the use of cash bail.
