Commentary: 5 myths about police militarization
Joel F. Shults, founder of the National Center for Police Advocacy, writes: "A recent report in Newsweek showed that law enforcement agencies have acquired six billion dollars of military surplus equipment over the past 18 years. The article, titled 'Militarization of Police,' points out the majority of products fall in the 'uncontrolled' category. The article also states that some police agencies have been expelled from the program. The bugaboo about militarization seemed to have subsided since the issue made headlines during the civil disturbances of the past half-decade or so. If it is going to raise its silly head again, we all need to remember a few realities."
