Commentary: EU and Japan sign new trade deal

The European Union and Japan signed a new free trade agreement earlier, the latest in a series of moves to further liberalize world trade. The deal has been characterized as a rebuke to President Donald Trump's policy trade protectionism, exemplified by a raft of new tariffs on imports. Trump promised new bilateral deals with a host of countries, but none have been concluded so far. In fact, none are being negotiated.
