Analysis of the nature and frequency of domestic transplant tourism in the US
from Liver Transplantation
The term “transplant tourism” was coined in 2008 in the Declaration of Istanbul on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism which defined two key concepts: 1) travel for transplantation: “movement of organs, donors, recipients or transplant professionals across jurisdictional borders for transplantation purposes;” and b) transplant tourism: travel for transplantation that “involves organ trafficking and/or transplant commercialism or if the resources devoted to providing transplants to patients from outside a country undermine the country's ability to provide transplant services for its own population.” There was no mention of traveling within one's own country.
