Tissue engineering, a new way to build organs
from Marin Independent Journal
Last year there were about 115,000 people on the transplant list and almost 35,000 transplants performed. That is a huge mismatch in demand versus supply. About 20 people die a day because they cannot get the transplant they need. The ultimate goal of health care would be keep organs healthy enough that they wouldn’t need replacement. Short of that, a goal of transplant medicine would be to replace organs without needing donors. That’s where tissue engineering comes in.
