Algorithms could soon help decide who goes free before trial and who has to stay behind bars in Dallas County. Like most places in Texas, the county uses cash bail as leverage to get people accused of crimes to return for their court hearings. But civil rights groups have argued in federal court that the county's judges set excessive bail amounts on poor arrestees who can't afford to buy their release.
