Surgery remains best treatment for appendicitis
from MedPage Today
Previous studies show differing results regarding surgical and nonsurgical treatment with antibiotics for cases of noncomplicated appendicitis. Some trials have indicated that nonoperative management failure and rates of appendicitis recurrence are higher than were found in the new study, while others showed that the costs of nonsurgical management of appendicitis were lower than those being surgically treated. Often, nonsurgical treatment is used in patients who are not good candidates for surgery. Until now, there have not been any national, large, longitudinal studies assessing the outcomes of nonoperative management of appendicitis.
