Big News from Gov. DeSantis: Surgeon General Named, Opioid Crisis Funding and More

On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis named a top UF doctor and professor, Dr. Scott Rivkees, as Florida's next surgeon general, a position that doubles as secretary of the Florida Department of Health. A pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Rivkees is a professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the UF College of Medicine and physician-in-chief of UF Health Shands Children's Hospital.

"I am deeply honored to accept the appointment of Florida Surgeon General, a position that has the responsibility to ensure Florida's 21 million citizens have access to affordable, safe and quality healthcare," Rivkees said to Sunshine State News. Gov. DeSantis also announced that Florida has secured an additional $26 million in federal funding for the state's opioid response project.
