Counseling Jewish American Clients

from ACA Publications

The alarming resurgence of brazen anti-Semitism in recent years points to the need to work effectively with and advocate for Jewish clients. Because of the limited scholarship on counseling Jewish people, counselors may lack spiritual, religious and multicultural competence in working with this population. The April 2019 issue of the Counseling and Values journal presents a primer on counseling Jewish Americans, with attention to the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies and the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling Competencies. Clinical considerations, such as help-seeking behaviors, the use of certain terms, Jewish identity, stereotypes and modern-day anti-Semitism, and the intersection of religion and LGBTQ+ status are discussed. An appendix with additional resources concludes the article. more
