From the Greatest Generation to today's young soldiers: How military legacy has been shaped over the years
from Post Crescent
Ron Lingle was only 19 when he volunteered to serve in the Army during the Vietnam War to spare his younger brother from being drafted. Lingle went to Vietnam in 1971 and spent a year there before he came home to Wisconsin. He was eager to return, but the welcome home he got was one he would never forget. "People were spitting on you and calling you names," Lingle said. "That didn't feel good at all especially with what you went through and at that age because you grew up fast. It wasn't a very good time."
