A bipartisan group of 51 members of the House of Representatives signed a letter to Commissioner Rettig and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin in support of a tax practitioner unit within the IRS. Many of the members who signed the letter sit on the Ways and Means Committee. The goal of such a unit would be to house all of the different programs and tools that practitioners use to assist taxpayers in one centralized office. “Creating a dedicated practitioner services division will enhance and centrally manage the current programs to efficiently resolve taxpayer issues and ultimately improve the taxpayer experience.”

Bob Kerr, EA, plus volunteer advocacy leaders Phyllis Jo Kubey, EA and Jennifer MacMillan, EA, were all quoted in an enrolled agent-filled Tax Notes article focused on the benefits of establishing such a unit. (Subscription required)

NAEA has advocated for many years for the creation of such a unit, including in our IRS Reform White Paper and during previous Congressional Fly-Ins, so the congressional letter is a welcome sign of momentum.

Revised Draft of Publication 15-T.
The IRS has issued a second draft of the 2020 Publication 15-T (Federal Income Tax Withholding Methods), detailing paycheck withholding instructions for employers.

Roger Harris, EA, President and COO of Padgett Business Services, as well as a longtime NAEA member, was instrumental in taking the lead with the Treasury Department to simplify small business withholding calculations. Treasury and IRS included NAEA in the process, and we are both pleased and grateful for our seat at the table.

While not perfect, the changes will go a long way in easing the transition for small businesses and the practitioner community. more
