New "Meet the Member" Feature Introduces Edward S. Potkanowicz, Ph.D., ACSM-EP

Ed (lft.) working with a driver-athlete.
Sports Medicine Bulletin kicks off September with a new monthly feature designed to introduce you to other ACSM members and celebrate their accomplishments. This month we are excited to spotlight lifelong racing enthusiast Edward S. Potkanowicz, Ph.D., ACSM-EP.

As a grad student, Ed uncovered a need to better protect racecar drivers. So, he set out to use objective scientific data to prove that drivers are, in fact, athletes and to use science to uncover ways to make them safer and more competitive. Full speed ahead, Dr. Potkanowicz now serves as the principal investigator for “The R.A.C.E.R. Project” and as an associate professor of exercise physiology at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. His research uses a variety of existing and novel biometrics to examine performance challenges and deficits a driver-athlete may experience with the goal of developing strategies to better manage core body temperature and physiological response to the microenvironment of the cockpit. Dr. Potkanowicz enjoys working directly with driver-athletes and helping them to prepare for the rigors of competition.

Dr. Potkanowicz joined ACSM more than 20 years ago. His favorite aspects of membership include staying current in the field by learning new things, networking with old and new friends and colleagues, and introducing his students to the profession and a community of like-minded people. Learn more about Dr. Potkanowicz’s work, his advice for students and what often surprises people about his career.

Want to share your work in a future feature? Simply complete this Meet the Member online questionnaire. An ACSM staff member will contact you once the form has been submitted. You can also nominate a fellow member. more
