NAFDMA Nugget of the Week

"Why do farmers farm, given their economic adversities on top of the many frustrations and difficulties normal to farming? And always the answer is: Love. They must do it for love. Farmers farm for the love of farming. They love to watch and nurture the growth of plants. They love to live in the presence of animals. They love to work outdoors. They love the weather, maybe even when it is making them miserable. They love to live where they work and to work where they live. If the scale of their farming is small enough, they like to work in the company of their children and with the help of their children." Quoted from Wendell Berry, author of Bringing it to the Table: On Farming and Food.

Unfortunately, this love of the industry is sometimes tempered by mental, physical, and emotional challenges. Remaining grounded during this busy time is difficult, while also wanting to present the world with the beauty of agriculture. One way to recenter - before you open your doors each morning, connect with staff to share one aspect of the love you have for your business with all of them.

Allowing the overwhelming, frustrated, "in the weeds" feelings to take a back seat to the whole reason that you engage in this industry - the love of it all - will give you the ability to share this energy with every soul who walks on your farm or shares in your products. more
