|NAPT® Annual Conference Speaker Spotlight: Steve McMahon
You won't want to miss the Opening Keynote session at the annual NAPT® Conference & Trade Show this year. Steve McMahon, Director of Safety Innovation with The MITRE Corporation, will explain the "Drive to Zero" concept, which is the heart of our "Zip. Zero. Nada. None™" campaign.
McMahon, a former senior executive at the Federal Aviation Administration and a Summa Cum laude graduate of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, has devoted his career to working proactively to identify safety trends and assess the impact of changes across industries. During his session, he'll connect the dots between collecting safety data, analyzing the data to identify areas of safety risk (areas for improvement), and reporting and tracking the improvements.
Why did he agree to join us in Columbus — and speak on a Saturday, no less — to kick off our conference this year?
Because, as best we can tell, there has never been a year when no students died as the result of a school bus crash, being hit by a car while getting on or off a school bus (or waiting at a bus stop) or being run over by their own bus, and McMahon wants that to change.
As we all know, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says a yellow school bus is the safest way for children to get to/home from school — 70 times safer than walking, riding a bicycle or riding in a car or light truck with an adult driver (teen drivers are exceptionally dangerous). But ...
There is an average of nearly 15 school transportation-related fatalities each school year. This includes students riding in a bus that are killed as the result of a crash (approx. 5), students that are hit by a passing motorist (approx. 5) and students that are run over by their own bus.
We aim to have no school transportation fatalities for an entire school year, no later than the school year that ends June 30, 2025. We're asking everyone who is interested in the safety of students that ride the school bus to join us in this effort.
